Athens, Temple of Olympian Zues

Alexandria Illa

The Temple of Olympian Zeus construction began around the 6th century BC but work was stopped due to the lack of money. Construction of the temple finished under the rule of emperor Hadrian. In 131 AD it was finally completed. This took about 700 years. Some people who are claimed to have been architects of this structure were Decimus Cossutius and Antistates. It was built to be a place to worship the gods, specifically Zues. Its length is 370 ft, its width is 185 ft and its height is 66ft. There are some interesting facts connected to this temple. Did you know that the Emperor Sulla took 2 columns for the Temple of Jupiter. The temple is made out of marble and it is said to be believed that Hadrian had a giant gold statue of Zues and one of him next to it, unfortunately none of that remains today. The only famous person that is connected to this temple is mainly the god Zeus.
